Dumfries and Galloway is a stronghold for red squirrels and I am very fortunate to have them visiting my garden. Numbers fluctuate from year to year but we generally see at least four individuals during the season. I feed them from special squirrel feeders on peanuts, sunflower seeds and locally grown hazelnuts but they also forage naturally on beech mast, fungi and fruits.

For photography I do encourage them in to specific locations or 'set ups' - the skill being to create something that looks entirely natural. Getting wintery shots is also a challenge as unlike further north we don't always get sufficient snow.
